Hello, my name is Sue, and I am a foster carer for Stockport. I've been a foster carer now for 14 years. I'm also a special guardian to a little girl as well. Just some points I'd like to make out about foster caring, first: it's the most enjoyable job I've ever had in my life. I've never been so happy doing this work. Previous to working as a foster carer, I did work in schools as a teaching assistant and I also took on work, working with children with autism, and I used to do respite care for a little boy who is now a big young man. I've always liked working with children and I find you can get a lot of out of it. Children are so innocent and they want nurturing and they just want stability and care. I find that in fostering, it is so rewarding, all the way through and there can be times when you feel a little bit sad, because it can be quite hard when the children are distressed. But usually with a bit of love and care and nurture, and a bit of listening to, they do flourish. I would never ever say to anybody to not do it, because we do need more foster carers, because the ones like myself are getting older, and we need some young blood coming into the care system. If you're thinking of foster caring, go along to a foster care meeting or ring up the foster caring team, and talk it through with somebody, but, from day one I can assure you that you will always have support, they're always there at the end of the phone, if you're worried about anything. I find I can't thank them enough, Stockport, they've been brilliant. So, don't hesitate, just go ahead and give it a go.
